Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Paired with Therapy

The Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience and Jefferson, Moss, Magee Rehabilitation offer Vivistim®, Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) paired with therapy. This treatment is FDA approved and may help stroke survivors improve hand and arm function.

VNS involves the implantation of a small stimulator device into the neck. During rehabilitation exercises and at-home activities, the VNS is activated to gently stimulate the brain via the vagus nerve. This boost to the brain helps strengthen and create new neural pathways, like building a new bridge to bypass the damaged area.
